Underwriting Program Manager, Stop Loss (Hybrid or Remote!)
An insurance company located in Hartford, CT is seeking an experienced Underwriting Program Manager to lead pricing strategy and underwriting performance for a dedicated block of Specific & Aggregate Stop Loss business. This is a high-impact leadership role within a fast-growing, entrepreneurial environment that blends autonomy with long-term stability. This role can be fully remote or 2-day hybrid option (if within 50 miles).
Compensation: $130,000-160,000 annually
Responsibilities:
- Own pricing strategy and profitability for a stop loss program, ensuring target loss ratios and persistency
- Lead, coach, and allocate work across a team of underwriters to drive consistent performance
- Develop and approve pricing recommendations for new and renewal employer stop loss accounts
- Partner closely with sales, program management, brokers, and TPAs to drive top-line growth
- Evaluate large claims data, identify medical cost drivers, and consult on plan design and coverage
- Make underwriting decisions within authority; escalate exceptions with clear risk analysis and justification
- Contribute to underwriting policies, procedures, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- 10+ years of medical stop loss underwriting experience
- 3+ years of underwriting team leadership strongly preferred
- Deep expertise in medical stop loss underwriting and healthcare payer dynamics
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to mentor and develop underwriting teams
- Advanced analytical, risk management, and pricing skills
- Excellent communication skills and comfort working directly with sales, brokers, and clients
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
