Controller (Hybrid, New York City)

Our client, a well-established endowment organization based in the New York City area, is looking to add a Controller to its finance team. This individual will join a lean, highly collaborative group and play a central role in managing accounting operations, financial reporting, audit and tax processes, and governance-related support across the endowment and affiliated entities.

Compensation includes a base salary up to $160K (commensurate with experience) plus bonus!

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily accounting and financial reporting functions in accordance with U.S. GAAP and internal controls

  • Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, financial statements, invoicing, and expense oversight

  • Review and manage deliverables prepared by external accounting service providers, including financial reports, allocations, and investor-related reporting

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and tax advisors

  • Assess financial reporting risks and implement appropriate controls and process enhancements

  • Interpret and apply accounting standards, ensuring policies and procedures are properly documented and followed

  • Support governance and oversight activities by preparing materials for board and stakeholder meetings

  • Maintain and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal control frameworks

  • Manage vendor relationships and contribute to operational efficiencies

  • Assist with ad hoc projects and broader initiatives tied to endowment management

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience within a fund, endowment, or foundation environment

  • Self-directed, collaborative professional comfortable owning responsibilities end to end

  • Familiarity with asset allocation concepts and alternative investments is a plus

  • Experience with financial and reporting systems (e.g., investment accounting platforms, QuickBooks, CRM tools)

  • Advanced Excel skills and strong proficiency across Microsoft Office

  • Bachelor’s degree required; CPA strongly preferred
